What is the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX)? The Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX) is a radio telescope located in the Atacama Desert in northern Chile. It is a collaboration between the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy, the European Southern Observatory, and the Onsala Space Observatory. APEX is designed to observe the universe at millimeter and … Read more
I. What is a Supercluster? Superclusters are large groups of galaxies that are bound together by gravity. They are some of the largest structures in the universe, spanning hundreds of millions of light-years across. Superclusters are made up of clusters of galaxies, which are themselves made up of individual galaxies. These structures are interconnected in … Read more
I. What is the Cosmological Horizon? The Cosmological Horizon is a fundamental concept in cosmology that refers to the maximum distance from which light or any other form of radiation can reach an observer. It is essentially the boundary beyond which information cannot be obtained due to the finite speed of light. In simpler terms, … Read more
I. What is Angular Diameter Distance? Angular diameter distance is a fundamental concept in astronomy that is used to measure the physical size of an object in the sky based on its apparent size and distance from Earth. It is defined as the ratio of an object’s physical size to its angular size as seen … Read more
I. What is the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO)? The Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory, or STEREO, is a pair of NASA spacecraft launched in 2006 with the primary goal of studying the Sun and its impact on Earth. STEREO consists of two nearly identical spacecraft, known as STEREO-A and STEREO-B, which orbit the Sun in … Read more
I. What is Hawking Radiation? Hawking radiation is a theoretical prediction made by physicist Stephen Hawking in 1974. It refers to the phenomenon where black holes emit radiation and gradually lose mass over time. This concept was groundbreaking as it challenged the long-held belief that black holes were completely black and did not emit any … Read more
I. What are astrochemical reactions? Astrochemical reactions refer to the chemical processes that occur in the vast expanse of space. These reactions involve the interaction of various molecules, atoms, and ions in the interstellar medium, which is the space between stars and galaxies. Astrochemical reactions play a crucial role in the formation of celestial bodies, … Read more
I. What is a Preburner? A preburner is a component used in rocket propulsion systems to increase the efficiency and performance of the engine. It is essentially a combustion chamber that is located upstream of the main combustion chamber in a rocket engine. The preburner is responsible for partially burning the propellants before they enter … Read more
What is the Mirror Universe? The Mirror Universe is a fictional parallel universe that exists in various science fiction franchises, most notably in the Star Trek series. In this alternate reality, the characters and events are often portrayed as darker and more sinister versions of their counterparts in the primary universe. The Mirror Universe is … Read more
I. What is Star Formation? Star formation is the process by which dense regions within molecular clouds in interstellar space collapse and form stars. These regions, known as stellar nurseries, are composed primarily of hydrogen gas and dust. As gravity causes these regions to contract, the gas and dust within them heat up and eventually … Read more
